One month! It's hard to believe we've only been here a month. With everything that's been going on, it feels a lot longer.
A bit of delay posting due to illness. Soren and Aaron both caught a cold for about a week. Somehow, I never caught it, by some miracle! Soren got his first baby ear infection, and had a lot of congestion, but he healed up fast enough and never developed a fever so we're counting ourselves lucky. Proof that he's feeling better now!
It's also cooled off massively, which feels wonderful. Here on the waterfront, temperatures stay between 60 and 75, a perfect temperature for long walks around the islands. (view of our apartment from the neighboring island)
For the most part, we are settled in to our new apartment. We're still missing some big items that will be arriving shortly (coffee table, lamps) but we have a routine to our days, as much as you can with a baby.
Our bedroom was a priority, for obvious reasons. Living out of a suitcase and sleeping on a mattress on the floor gets old really quick, especially when you are getting up at odd hours with a baby. We have some closet space, a dresser, and storage drawers under the bed (which the cats are quite fond of sleeping in!). Soren sleeps in his travel crib in the room with us at night, and his big boy crib during the day. Curtains get hung in a ceiling mounted rail, which takes up much less space than a traditional rod.
Of course, this photo is already out of date. Using the travel crib every night was really taking a toll on our backs, so we've moved his crib into our room! It makes the nursery kind of bare and the bedroom pretty full, but it's working for us for now.
Soren's nursery is roughly the same size as the master bedroom, but without the hallway of closet space. We brought another copy of the decal we used in his Wisconsin bedroom, so he still has his tree and owls!
Our kitchen space is beautiful, and not actually much smaller than what I'm used to. Some things we needed to adjust to:
- Apartments in Helsinki don't come with ceiling lights, just plugs. We had to go buy those from Ikea. Thankfully, we moved in the peak of summer when the sun hardly sets!
- Induction stovetop
- We still don't know how to turn the range hood on
- The refrigerator is TALL. Too tall for me to reach the top shelf easily :(
- No ice machine or built in water filter. The tap water is fine and tastes great!
The kitchen does have some cool features, but I'll go into that more on a later date!
Last but not least, the porch! This is the only half that is furnished - clearly, the cats approve!
The white wall is actually a privacy wall that can be placed into the floor to separate the living area from the hallway, but we prefer the open arrangement. I actually like the way it brightens up the porch.
I'm not showing our living area at the moment. It is a MESS and very much unfinished. Let's be honest, it's mostly chairs surrounding baby toys :)
This is in our building's courtyard! I can't wait until Soren is old enough to enjoy the sandbox.
As usual, finishing off with more cute baby photos. New skill include reaching out to books, using teething toys, turning his crib fish tank on and off, and tossing any toys that aren't tethered out of his stroller. Until next time!
